The Capitol, a Gutenberg Bible, LBJ, and the Broken Spoke

The Texas Capitol uses sunset-red granite from Burnet County and still houses the legislature and state offices. The Bullock Museum puts the 1686 La Belle shipwreck, objects made in Texas more than 10,000 years ago, oil-field exhibits, an aircraft, and Austin City Limits footage under one roof.On the UT campus, Ellsworth Kelly's Austin fills a stone building with colored-glass light. The Harry Ransom Center displays a complete Gutenberg Bible and the earliest surviving camera photograph. The LBJ Library's renovated galleries cover civil rights, the Great Society, Vietnam, the space race, and 1968 with documents, recordings, artifacts, and interactive media. The Carver Museum covers Black life in Austin from a campus that began as the city's segregated library branch. The Broken Spoke closes the set with country bands, dance lessons, and a floor that has been in use since 1964.
