George Washington Carver Museum
Austin's first permanent public-library building was moved to Angelina Street in 1933 and became the city's branch for Black residents under segregation. It was called the Colored Branch for more than a decade, renamed for George Washington Carver in 1947, and converted into a museum in 1980 after a larger library opened next door. The current Carver campus includes permanent exhibits on Juneteenth, Black Austin families, scientists, and inventors, plus rotating art galleries, a theater, programs, and a genealogy center. Museum admission is free. The genealogy center uses separate hours, and Sunday is closed.
