Texas Capitol

Texas paid for the current Capitol with three million acres of public land in the Panhandle. Contractors switched from local limestone to donated sunset-red granite from Burnet County, moving 188,518 cubic feet of stone on a specially built railroad. More than 1,000 people worked on the building before its 1888 dedication. The Capitol remains an active government building with legislative offices, chambers, exhibits, and free tours. The public entrance uses security screening, chamber access changes with official business, and building hours can extend during legislative sessions. The grounds and separate visitor center keep their own schedules.
