Bde Maka Ska

Bde Maka Ska means White Earth Lake in Dakota. Heyáta Othúŋwe, a Dakota agricultural village, stood on the shore beginning in 1829. Minnesota made the Dakota name official again in 2018 after generations in which maps and signs used Lake Calhoun. The largest lake in the Chain of Lakes now has paths, beaches, sailing water, pavilion space, and interpretation of Dakota history. Park access is free. Swimming, boating, rentals, concessions, equipment inspections, water quality, ice, and facilities change by season.
