Stone Arch Bridge

Railroad executive James J. Hill opened Stone Arch Bridge in 1883 to carry passenger trains across the Mississippi beside St. Anthony Falls. Its 21 stone arches now carry a shared walking and cycling path with views of the falls, lock, flour-mill district, skyline, and opposite riverbank. The bridge is free and open daily as part of the park system. It has little shelter from wind, heat, winter ice, storms, or event crowds. Repair and riverfront projects can change the available approaches even when the crossing remains open.
