Gas Works Park

A coal and oil gasification plant operated on this Lake Union site from 1906 to 1956. Landscape architect Richard Haag kept its five-story cracking towers and other machinery when he designed the park, using early soil-remediation methods instead of clearing every trace of the industrial site.Kite Hill now faces the Seattle skyline, and the former plant structures dominate the park. The machinery is fenced and off-limits. Hazardous substances remain in Lake Union sediment, so swimming, fishing, wading, and boat launching are prohibited at this park.
