Hiram M. Chittenden Locks
The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks use a 150-foot small lock and an 825-foot large lock to move vessels between Puget Sound and the freshwater Ship Canal. A six-gate spillway controls lake levels, and an integrated fish ladder gives migrating salmon another route. The complex formally opened on July 4, 1917.The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates the locks around the clock, while the public grounds and fish-ladder viewing room have separate daily hours. The grounds also include a visitor center and botanical garden. Salmon runs and vessel traffic vary, and bicycles must be walked across the working lock walls.
