International Rose Test Garden
Portland opened the International Rose Test Garden in 1917 to protect and test new rose varieties during World War I. The hillside beds still work as a public trial ground, with thousands of bushes and hundreds of labeled varieties showing differences in color, fragrance, shape, and performance in the Pacific Northwest climate. The garden is free and includes an accessible main promenade, an amphitheater, and broad city views. Peak bloom usually falls between late spring and early fall, but timing changes with the weather. Washington Park parking is limited and paid. From May through August, maintenance closes the garden from 5:00 to 10:00 a.m. on alternating Wednesdays.
