Fort Moultrie

A palmetto-log and sand fort on Sullivan's Island repelled a British naval attack in 1776. Fortifications at the same harbor position were rebuilt and modernized for 171 years as ships, guns, mines, concrete batteries, and command systems changed. The National Park Service presents the site as a walk through different eras, including the brick fort completed in 1809, Civil War defenses, late-19th-century batteries, and a World War II harbor entrance control post. Most of the visit is outdoors, and heat, storms, holidays, historic surfaces, and temporary closures can affect access.
