Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon
The Old Exchange was completed in 1771 and served at different times as a commercial exchange, custom house, post office, city hall, military headquarters, and museum. Its official history also identifies it as Charleston's most common location for public slave auctions between the Revolution and the Civil War.During British occupation, the lower floor became the Provost prison for prisoners of war, civilians, soldiers, and enslaved people. Upper floors are self-guided, while the cellar uses guided tours that normally run every half hour. Admission is paid, Sunday opens later, and events or attendance can change tour times.
