Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site
Charles Towne Landing marks the Ashley River site where English colonists established South Carolina's first permanent European settlement in 1670. Native people, English settlers, Africans, and Barbadians all entered its history under profoundly unequal conditions. The state historic site includes an exhibit hall, archaeological remains, a reconstructed palisade, an experimental crop garden, and Adventure, a replica trading vessel. Park grounds stay open later than some staffed facilities, and the visitor center, animal forest, and ship follow their own schedules. Heat, storms, and holidays can change access.
