Mount Trashmore Park

Finish on a hill that used to be 640,000 tons of garbage. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Virginia Beach converted the landfill into what the city calls the nation's first landfill park. Layers of waste and clean soil became a main hill 60 feet high and 800 feet long, with a smaller Encore Hill, two lakes, paths, playgrounds, a skate park, and a water-wise garden. The design does not make the buried system disappear; it makes reclamation visible enough to become the city's unlikely landmark. The official page does not publish one stable clock schedule; visitors must follow posted closing times, and the fixed Builder entry is only a daylight-based snapshot for August 26, 2026. Windsor Woods stormwater construction has permanently closed the South Boulevard parking lot, so use the Edwin Drive arrival and check current barriers. Paved routes, restrooms, parking, and a playground with a wheelchair swing are documented, but the hill itself is steep and the whole experience is not tagged Wheelchair Accessible. No swimming or wading is allowed in the lakes, and sledding is prohibited during snow events.
