Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum
Read the resort strip through one house that refused to disappear.Built in 1895, the de Witt Cottage is the oldest remaining private structure on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and survived decades of redevelopment around it. The city acquired and restored the house after the de Witt family sought its preservation; Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum opened here in 1995. Inside, carvings, paintings, photographs, and artifacts trace decoys from Native origins through market hunting, collecting, and contemporary folk art. The story is not a romance of limitless birds: it includes craft, family, commerce, conservation law, and changing values.Access and volatility truth: Admission is free and donations are encouraged. A small visitor lot sits on Atlantic Avenue. Live carving demonstrations and programs are schedule-dependent and must never be promised in evergreen copy. The museum's published summer schedule is daily 10:00–17:00 after Memorial Day; after Labor Day it returns to Wednesday–Sunday 10:00–17:00 with Monday and Tuesday closed. The official site does not document enough whole-building mobility detail to justify the Wheelchair Accessible tag; call ahead with route questions.
