San Xavier del Bac Mission
Enter as a guest, not a spectator.San Xavier serves the Wa:k community in the San Xavier District of the Tohono O'odham Nation, as the parish emphasizes today. The mission began in 1692; construction of the present church ran from 1783 to 1797 under New Spain. Its Baroque interior and ongoing conservation carry a colonial history, but the building's meaning is not sealed in the past: it remains a place of prayer, school, feast days, and community life.Visit quietly around Mass and private rites, follow tribal and parish rules, and ask before photographing ceremonies or people. The church, museum, mausoleum, and restrooms are currently open 09:00-16:00, with free admission. The church has no air conditioning or heating and outdoor shade is limited. Tours are donation-based, heat-sensitive, and do not include a guided church interior; drones are prohibited and tribal regulations apply.
