Mission Garden
Begin with water moving through stone. The Santa Cruz River floodplain around Sentinel Peak holds one of the longest records of continuous cultivation in the United States. Mission Garden interprets roughly 4,000 years of farming and at least 3,500 years of canal irrigation through plots devoted to early agriculture, O'odham foodways before and after European contact, and later Spanish, Mexican, Chinese, Yoeme, African diasporic, medicinal, and youth traditions.Take a self-guided map at the entrance and follow the acequia before choosing a plot to read closely. Admission is free. Current warm-season hours end at noon; October through March the garden stays open until 14:00. Main compacted-dirt paths are mostly level but include occasional dips, and severe weather can close the site. Two permit-only accessible parking spaces, accessible approaches and restrooms are documented, but heat, sun, dirt, and surface dips remain real.
