Empire Fulton Ferry
Stand on the lawn between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the waterfront becomes a compressed history of movement. Ferries crossed here long before either bridge; Robert Fulton’s steam-powered Fulton Ferry Company began service in 1814, rail lines reached the landing in the 1850s, and monumental warehouses rose behind the shore. Start near the boardwalk, frame Lower Manhattan under the Brooklyn Bridge, then turn toward Empire Stores and the Manhattan Bridge. The bridges changed everything. Brooklyn Bridge traffic displaced much of the ferry trade after 1883, the Manhattan Bridge followed in 1909, and the working waterfront later declined. What looks effortless today—a lawn, restored carousel, gardens, boardwalk, and open river view—grew from a decades-long civic effort to reclaim piers and industrial land as Brooklyn Bridge Park. The old edge survives in warehouse walls, bridge approaches, ferry landings, and the scale of the harbor. Brooklyn Bridge Park is generally open 6 AM–1 AM, but individual lawns and facilities have separate rules. The Empire Fulton Ferry lawn currently closes Tuesdays and Thursdays so new grass can establish, and waterfront weather can change programs without notice. Restrooms are available in Empire Stores during posted hours. Keep bike and pedestrian paths clear and follow lawn closures. No carousel ride, food, event entry, ferry fare, or partner benefit is included.
