Pier 57 Rooftop Park
Across from Little Island, Pier 57 offers the opposite waterfront gesture: not a new landscape lifted on sculptural supports, but public space made by carefully reusing a massive working pier. Enter through the south gate near City Winery, take the stairs or elevator, and walk to the outer edge before turning back. From nearly two acres of roof, the Hudson, Lower Manhattan, shoreline piers, and the city grid read as one continuous system. The story sits below your feet. A wooden freight pier built in 1907 burned in 1947; its 1950s replacement was engineered on three enormous hollow concrete caissons, an unusual structure that helped earn Pier 57 a place on the National Register of Historic Places. When the rooftop park opened in spring 2022, it fulfilled a public-space commitment within the restored pier rather than hiding the industrial body beneath a new attraction. Notice old-scale structure, planted edges, and the long horizontal view. The rooftop is open daily from 6 AM–1 AM, but weather, maintenance, or events can alter access. Use the south gate directly across from Little Island and follow signs to the roof; Market 57 keeps separate hours. Keep railings and circulation clear, supervise children near edges, and expect wind and exposed conditions. No food, market purchase, event reservation, reserved seating, or partner benefit is included.
