Little Island
From the Hudson River Park path, Little Island first reads as structure: hundreds of concrete tulip-shaped supports gather above the water, then lift a planted landscape into a sequence of slopes, overlooks, and performance spaces. Cross either bridge and follow a path upward before choosing a view. The changing height is the experience—city and river disappear behind planting, then reopen from a new angle. The park opened on May 21, 2021 at Pier 55, between West 13th and 14th Streets. Its new landscape sits between remnants of Piers 54 and 56, part of an older Hudson working edge shaped by ships, commerce, and neighborhood change. Look back from an overlook to compare the surviving piles with the new supports: the park does not erase the pier story; it builds another chapter above it. Little Island is a free public park, not a guaranteed performance or event. It opens at 6 AM year-round, but closing time changes by season—midnight in peak summer, 11 PM in spring and early fall, and 9 PM late in the year—and weather can close the entire park. There is no dedicated parking. Stay on paths, follow event and lawn notices, and check same-day conditions before traveling. No ticket, reserved seat, food, performance access, or partner benefit is included.
