The Battery

At Manhattan’s southern edge, the city finally gives way to harbor. Begin at Castle Clinton, walk through perennial gardens or the Bosque, then follow the promenade toward the Statue of Liberty view and Whitehall Ferry Terminal. The Battery is not one preserved scene; it is 25 acres where defense, arrival, recreation, ecology, and transportation have repeatedly occupied the same changing ground. The Lenape and Munsee used this shore for hunting and fishing, and a trading path from here grew into Broadway. After a fort was demolished in 1790, the waterfront became a public promenade. Castle Clinton began as an offshore battery completed in 1811, then became a theater, the Castle Garden immigration depot that processed eight million arrivals from 1855–1890, and later the New York Aquarium. Landfill eventually folded the once-island fort into Manhattan. Read those layers against today’s gardens, ferry lines, bikeway, and open water. The Battery is open public parkland, but its destinations do not share one schedule. Castle Clinton, ferry ticketing, SeaGlass Carousel, cafes, and three public restrooms all keep separate hours; the restrooms are currently listed 9 AM–4:30 PM. Construction and harbor weather can change routes. Keep ferry queues and bikeway circulation clear, and check each destination before relying on entry. No Castle program, ferry ticket, carousel ride, food, reserved event, or partner benefit is included.
