Winter Garden
Walk west from the Oculus through the underground passage and Lower Manhattan changes direction. The city’s hard-edged transit spaces give way to an arched glass room lined with palms, and the view continues toward the Hudson and North Cove Marina. This is the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place: a commercial atrium that has also become a downtown living room. Cross to the center, look back along the barrel-vaulted roof, then turn toward the water to understand how light and shoreline organize the space. Palms have shaped the room’s identity since 1988, when the first set was introduced with help from the New York Botanical Garden and horticulturalist John Mini. Because indoor palms grow quickly without wind and weather, Brookfield replaces them roughly once a decade for safety; the current generation was planted in 2024. Around them, the atrium continues to host concerts, art installations, seasonal events, meetings, and the ordinary pause between a ferry, an office, and a meal. Brookfield Place is active retail, dining, office, and event space. Use posted accessible entrances at 250 Vesey, 100 West Street, or 225 Liberty; accessible restrooms are available near the Winter Garden’s 225 Liberty entrance. Shops are generally listed for 10 AM–8 PM Monday–Saturday and 11 AM–6 PM Sunday on the operator’s getting-here page, while restaurants and events vary. Keep through-routes clear and check the day’s event notices. No purchase, reserved seat, event admission, or partner benefit is included.
