Grand Central Terminal

Step off 42nd Street and the city suddenly opens into a room built for movement at monumental scale. Grand Central’s present terminal opened in 1913, and the Main Concourse still turns an ordinary act—meeting a train or a friend—into a civic ritual. Look first to the four-faced information-booth clock, then up to the blue-green zodiac ceiling: 12 gold-leaf constellations and thousands of stars hover above the paths commuters draw across the floor. The room is not preserved behind glass. Metro-North passengers, visitors, shops, and dining all share it, and Grand Central Madison added Long Island Rail Road service below in 2023. Walk the concourse without blocking passenger flow, then try the Guastavino-tiled Whispering Gallery near the Oyster Bar if it is accessible. The terminal is open daily 5:15 AM–2 AM; individual businesses keep different hours. No purchase, tour, or special access is included.
