Canalside

The Erie Canal reached Lake Erie at Buffalo in 1825, making the Commercial Slip and surrounding harbor a transfer point between inland waterways and the Great Lakes. Reconstructed canal elements and public spaces now make parts of the former industrial waterfront visible again.Interpretation at Canalside includes William Wells Brown, an escaped slave, abolitionist, writer, and Buffalo steamboat worker who helped other people reach freedom. The outdoor waterfront is generally available from dawn to dusk. Weather, ice, construction, water conditions, and scheduled events can change routes or access.
