GLBT Historical Society Museum
The GLBT Historical Society Museum opened in the Castro in January 2011. Its 1,600-square-foot storefront became the first stand-alone museum of LGBTQ history and culture in the United States. A long-term gallery covers San Francisco's queer past, and a second gallery holds changing exhibitions.Displays draw from more than 1,000 archival collections containing photographs, publications, clothing, matchbooks, protest signs, recorded interviews, and personal papers. The Society's holdings include a surviving fragment of one of the original eight-color rainbow flags raised in 1978. Admission is paid, Monday is closed, and the museum closes for a half hour in the middle of each open day.
