Chinese Historical Society of America Museum

The Chinese Historical Society of America was founded in 1963, making it the country's oldest organization devoted to Chinese American history. Its museum occupies the former Chinatown YWCA, a brick building designed by Julia Morgan and completed in 1932 for Chinese women and girls who were excluded from other YWCA facilities. The collection holds roughly 22,000 artifacts, photographs, documents, textiles, paintings, and oral histories. Rotating exhibitions cover immigration, exclusion laws, work, family life, art, resistance, and Chinese American communities across the country. The museum charges admission and currently opens only on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
