Ferry Building
San Francisco's Ferry Building opened on July 13, 1898. Its 245-foot clock tower copied the profile of Seville's Giralda, while a 660-foot skylit nave moved arriving ferry passengers toward Market Street. Before the Bay and Golden Gate bridges opened, as many as 50,000 people passed through the terminal each day.Bridge traffic reduced ferry use, and the Embarcadero Freeway blocked the building from the city for 35 years. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the freeway, which was later demolished. A four-year restoration reopened the Ferry Building in 2003. Ferries still use the terminal, and the old nave now holds food shops and a farmers market with vendor schedules that differ from the building's hours.
