Crocker Art Museum
Turn a railroad fortune into a public question.Edwin and Margaret Crocker assembled much of their collection during a European trip from 1869 to 1871, while Edwin's work as legal counsel to the Central Pacific tied the family's wealth to California's railroad era. In 1885, Margaret donated the building and collection to the city. The resulting museum—now spanning the 1872 historic complex and the 2010 Teel Family Pavilion—became the first public art museum west of the Mississippi.Move between the mansion-scale rooms and the modern galleries and ask what changed when a private collection became a civic institution. The building is barrier-free, with three elevators, accessible restrooms, free wheelchairs and stools, and noise-reduction earmuffs. American Sign Language interpretation can be requested in advance.
