Look underneath the sidewalk.The museum occupies a replica of Sacramento's 1854 City Hall and Waterworks, close to the river that powered the city and repeatedly flooded it. Its galleries connect Indigenous roots, migration, commerce, and civic life; separately ticketed Underground Tours descend into the spaces created when streets and buildings were raised above the flood line.Use the museum to understand why Old Sacramento looks the way it does before walking the surrounding blocks.
