Sutter's Fort State Historic Park

Read the fort against its own legend.Built on Nisenan homeland, Sutter's settlement became a colonial and economic center from 1839 to 1849. California State Parks now states plainly that Native people built the fort and that exploited Native labor powered its industries—a history made still harsher by the upheaval of the Gold Rush. A current interpretation redesign is bringing Tribal and public voices into how that story is told.Enter from the east gate facing 28th Street and leave time to read beyond the rooms and artifacts. There is no onsite parking, and ongoing walkway work can periodically close entrances and create a short wait. Firm earthen paths and many interior routes are accessible, but slopes, historic thresholds, upper spaces, and some rooms may require assistance or alternative interpretation.
