Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia
Black History Museum moved into the restored Leigh Street Armory in 2016. Built in 1895 for Black soldiers, the fortress-like armory served its militia for only four years before the battalion was dissolved, then survived fire, abandonment, and decades behind a padlock. The museum covers Black history and culture across Virginia through a permanent timeline and changing exhibitions. Admission is paid, and it opens only Wednesday through Saturday. Holidays and exhibition installation can further narrow access.
