Virginia State Capitol

Thomas Jefferson designed the Virginia State Capitol from France in 1785, using the Maison Carrée at Nîmes as a model for the new republic's public architecture. The completed building remains a working seat of government where five Virginia constitutions have been made.Admission and regular tours are free. Visitors enter through the Bank Street entrance and pass security screening. The Capitol building keeps different hours from the surrounding square, and legislative work, state holidays, demonstrations, and official events can alter access.
