Historic Yates Mill County Park

Yates Mill is the last survivor of roughly 70 water-powered mills that once worked in Wake County. A 12-foot overshot wheel draws from a 24-acre millpond, while restored machinery includes parts of Oliver Evans's 1790 automated flour-milling process. The park and nature museum are free, but mill interiors open only for advertised tours, generally from March through November. The 174-acre site is managed as a wildlife refuge, so pets are prohibited except trained service animals. Heat, storms, water conditions, and maintenance can cancel tours.
