North Carolina Museum of Art
North Carolina's legislature appropriated $1 million for an art collection in 1947, making the state the first to use public funds at that scale to buy art for its people. The collection opened as a museum in 1956 and now spans more than 5,000 years. The main collection and 164-acre Museum Park are free, while selected exhibitions and programs require tickets. Galleries close Monday and Tuesday, but the park follows longer dawn-to-dusk hours. Trail work, weather, events, and gallery rotations can affect access.
