Pope House Museum
Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope was a physician, military veteran, businessman, and the only African American man to run for mayor of a Southern capital during the Jim Crow era. More than 3,000 family objects remain in his house, including freedman papers, a voter registration card, furniture, and his Spanish-American War medical bag.Pope House is North Carolina's only African American house museum and admission is free. Ordinary public hours are limited to Saturday and Sunday, with tours first come, first served. The historic building has inherent access constraints that are best confirmed with museum staff.
