Roger Williams National Memorial

Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636 after being banished from Massachusetts for religious dissent and surviving with Native help. The National Park Service also explains his role as an English colonist and his later participation in selling captured Native people into Caribbean slavery after King Philip's War.The small grounds are free and officially open from dawn to dusk. The visitor center follows narrower seasonal hours and currently opens Thursday through Sunday in summer. Weather, emergencies, construction, holidays, and security can change access.
