Reading Terminal Market
Reading Terminal Market opened on February 22, 1893, beneath the Reading Railroad’s new terminal. Merchants from the Butchers’ and Farmers’ Market and Franklin Market had refused to leave the block, so the railroad built the new market under its tracks. The floor followed Philadelphia’s street grid, with twelve aisles and four wider avenues. By 1913, 250 food dealers and 100 farmers occupied the stalls.More than 80 independent merchants now sell produce, meat, seafood, baked goods, prepared food, books, crafts, and clothing. Two businesses descend from original standholders. The market is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., though individual schedules vary and Pennsylvania Dutch merchants close on Sundays. New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are closed in 2026.
