Independence Hall

Independence Hall was built starting in 1732 as Pennsylvania’s State House. Its Assembly Room later hosted the Second Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention. George Washington was appointed commander in chief there in 1775, the Articles of Confederation were adopted there in 1781, and the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were signed in the same room. The second floor served as a hospital for wounded American prisoners during the British occupation and hosted fugitive slave trials in the 1850s. Admission is free. The current morning open house does not require a ticket; tours from 10 a.m. through 4:20 p.m. do, with a $1 handling fee. Everyone passes security before entering Independence Square, and only the first floor is wheelchair accessible.
