Tipitina's

Local music fans opened Tipitina's on January 14, 1977, to give Professor Longhair a regular place to perform. The club took its name from one of his songs. He played there until his death in 1980, and the venue grew into a much broader Uptown stage for New Orleans musicians and touring acts. The 1912 building previously held a gambling house, gymnasium, and brothel. A banana in the Tipitina's logo is the surviving reference to an early juice bar, and WWOZ once broadcast shows by lowering a microphone through a hole in the upstairs floor. Admission, age rules, and opening times now follow the event calendar.
