Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
A palace built to weather Miami. James Deering planned Vizcaya as a winter home on Biscayne Bay, first occupying the Main House on Christmas Day 1916. Its rooms and formal gardens borrow from European precedents, but the estate’s meaning is inseparable from South Florida: designers worked at the subtropical shoreline, Deering preserved native rockland hammock, and the whimsical Stone Barge also acts as a breakwater. That beauty remains vulnerable. Salt, humidity, water infiltration, and hurricanes have shaped a century of conservation, so the scars and patina are part of the story rather than flaws to polish away. Vizcaya is currently open daily except Tuesday, 9:30am–4:30pm, with ticketed admission. Expect uneven stone, gravel, steps, and limited access to some garden rooms; the official accessibility page identifies ramps and alternative routes. Recheck tickets, restoration impacts, and weather before you go.
