The Wolfsonian-FIU
Look twice at the fortress. The Wolfsonian began as the Washington Storage Company, a 1927 Mediterranean Revival building by Robertson & Patterson conceived as protection against South Florida’s elements. After Mitchell “Micky” Wolfson Jr. acquired it in 1985, architect Mark Hampton enlarged and transformed the storehouse into a museum—an apt home for objects whose design once moved people, products, and politics.Today its 200,000-plus holdings span 1850–1950, from furniture and appliances to posters, architectural drawings, rare books, and propaganda. The collection asks not only what things look like, but what they persuade us to believe. The museum is currently closed Monday–Tuesday, open 10am–6pm Wednesday–Thursday and Saturday–Sunday, and open until 9pm Friday. Admission rules vary; Florida residents currently enter free. Check the official site for exhibitions, tickets, and holiday changes.
