Geology Museum
UW-Madison began gathering and displaying Wisconsin geological and mineral samples in 1848. Much of the collection was destroyed in an 1884 fire, but the free museum now holds rocks from ancient volcanoes, fossils from prehistoric seas, meteorites, fluorescent minerals, dinosaurs, and a historic mounted mastodon. The museum is on one wheelchair-accessible level and provides stools. Weekday hours end in late afternoon, Saturday closes at 1 p.m., and Sunday is closed. Groups of 10 or more must contact the museum in advance, while campus parking is limited.
