Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve
A municipal necessity became a refuge. Water-treatment ponds at Henderson’s reclamation facility proved irresistible to migratory waterfowl, and the city turned that accidental habitat into a public preserve in 1998.Today nine ponds across roughly 140 acres sit on the eastern edge of the Pacific Flyway. More than 270 bird species have been recorded here, and five miles of mostly level trails make the relationship between water reuse, city infrastructure, and wildlife unusually easy to see.Summer hours from June through August are 6:00 a.m.–noon; the rest of the year the Preserve is generally open daily 7:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., with last entry 30 minutes before closing and several holiday closures. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and binoculars if you have them. Pets, feeding wildlife, biking, and running are not permitted.
