Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument
This desert remembers wetlands. Across roughly 570,000 years, water repeatedly transformed the upper Las Vegas Valley, leaving layered sediments that now hold evidence of mammoths, horses, camels, bison, and other Pleistocene life. The monument is not a conventional attraction with a single polished loop. Its pale ridges and fossil-bearing washes are a record you enter carefully: notice the sediment layers, imagine the vanished water, and leave every fragment exactly where it lies.Access is daylight only and conditions are exposed, rugged, and hot. There is no full-service visitor-center experience at this pin. Carry water, check the National Park Service for current access and programs, stay on approved roads, and never dig, collect, or remove fossils. Spring and fall are generally the most practical seasons.
