First African Baptist Church

First African Baptist Church's congregation was constituted in 1777 and continues to worship in its 19th-century sanctuary. The building has held worship, education, organizing, and community life through slavery, the Civil War, segregation, and the civil-rights era.The church tells this history through scheduled afternoon tours on its own terms. It remains an active sacred space, so worship and special events take priority over tourism. The current public history schedule is narrow, and reservations or advance confirmation may be required.
