National WWI Museum and Memorial
Kansas City built remembrance at civic scale. In 1921, all five Allied commanders arrived through Union Station for the Liberty Memorial site dedication, joining a vast public gathering on the rise across the street. The tower and grounds that followed made grief, service, and international history part of the city’s everyday horizon. The institution kept growing beneath the monument. In 2004, Congress designated it the nation’s official World War I museum, and a major museum expansion opened below the memorial. Galleries now move from political causes and global systems to the intensely personal evidence of war—letters, objects, choices, and losses—so the tower’s abstraction is answered by individual lives. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the museum is currently open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Regular-season hours are Wednesday through Monday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Tuesday; galleries and tower require tickets. The galleries are mobility accessible, but the historic tower is not fully accessible: after the elevator, visitors must climb 45 additional steps.
