Union Station Kansas City
Meet beneath the clock. Union Station opened in 1914 as a Beaux-Arts machine for movement: twelve railroads shared the project, separate levels kept passengers and baggage flowing, and the immense waiting rooms turned arrival into civic theater. In 1945, passenger traffic reached a record as service members came home through these halls. Then the room nearly went silent. Rail decline left the building neglected and threatened, but voters on both sides of the state line approved a bi-state sales tax in 1996 to fund its rescue. The restored station reopened in 1999, and Amtrak returned in 2002. That history makes the Grand Hall more than a beautiful interior—it is evidence that a region chose to keep a common room. There is no charge to enter the historic station. Science City, the planetarium, films, and touring exhibitions require separate tickets, and individual attraction hours vary. Amtrak remains active, so leave circulation paths clear and check the official site for current building and attraction hours.
