The Kansas City Public Library: Central Library
A bank once guarded private wealth here; now the building circulates knowledge. The Kansas City Public Library moved its Central Library into the restored 1906 First National Bank building in 2004, and the conversion makes the change in purpose visible. Columns frame the old banking hall, a 34-foot skylit reading room gives study the scale of ceremony, and an original vault has become a tiny film theater. The deeper story began long before this building. Kansas City’s library was founded in 1873 with only a bookcase and a small encyclopedia set, then grew alongside a city trying to define public education and civic access after the Civil War. That lineage gives the grand architecture its point: this is not a private monument you merely admire, but a working place you can enter and use.Entry is free. Current hours are Sunday 1–5 p.m., Monday through Wednesday 9 a.m.–7 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. The 10th Street accessible entrance is temporarily closed for elevator repairs; follow the library’s current guidance to the Baltimore Avenue accessible entrance.
