Kingsley Plantation
Read the walls before the plantation house. The tabby remains of twenty-five cabins—survivors from an original semicircle of thirty-two—hold the most important spatial fact at Kingsley: this landscape was organized around enslaved labor.Hundreds of people were enslaved across the plantation’s long operating life. Archaeology, oral history, and official records continue to recover names, family life, work, resistance, and survival from a system designed to reduce people to property. Anna Kingsley’s story must keep its full contradiction: she survived the Middle Passage and enslavement, gained freedom and property, and later enslaved others herself.Arrive prepared for the road and the limits of a historic site. The final approach includes an approximately two-mile dirt road that can be rough; the paved Fort George Road route can flood, parking and turnaround space are limited, and ride-share pickup can be unreliable. Accessible parking and restrooms are available, but the planter house has steps and upper floors are closed. Check NPS conditions before departure.
