Pass

Where the River Finds the Sea

Follow the current until the city opens into the Atlantic. This seven-stop pass begins beside the St. Johns in Riverside, listens for LaVilla’s music, and then moves east through the complicated ground where coast, empire, labor, and memory meet. The route refuses a single postcard version of Jacksonville. Fort Caroline is a modern reconstruction, useful precisely when read alongside the much older Timucuan landscape and the conflict that followed French arrival. At Kingsley Plantation, tabby cabin remains and ongoing research keep the lives of enslaved people visible; Anna Kingsley’s survival, freedom, property ownership, and participation in slavery belong to the same unresolved story.Reserve another stretch of the journey for living systems: arboretum trails, the zoo’s wildlife and botanical work, then Hanna Park’s lake, forest, dunes, and surf. This is a self-paced drive, best over two days. Check weather, admission, ferry and road conditions, holiday closures, and appointment-only access before leaving.
