Rothko Chapel
Walk a few blocks from the Menil and the city grows quieter again. The Rothko Chapel is a place to sit, look, meditate, or simply let the room settle around you; the visitor guidelines protect that silent, contemplative atmosphere. Begin at the Welcome House if you want the founders’ and building’s context, then cross Sul Ross to the chapel and allow more than a quick photograph. Outside, the grounds extend the pause around Broken Obelisk and remain open from dawn to dusk. Chapel admission is free, with regular hours Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but public programs and private events close it about twice a month. Check the official calendar before traveling. Its contribution here is stillness: a public room where Houston’s cultural ambition is measured in sustained attention.
