Briscoe Western Art Museum
The Briscoe occupies a 1930s building that began as San Antonio's public library and later held the Hertzberg Circus Collection and Museum. It reopened as the Briscoe in 2013, and a small library portal remains on the first floor because the building's deed still requires a public-library presence.Galleries combine paintings, sculpture, photography, and historical objects connected to Native peoples, Tejano and vaquero traditions, Spanish heritage, wildlife, ranching, and the American frontier. The mix puts several versions of the West in the same building, and temporary exhibitions add living artists and newer interpretations.General admission is paid, and temporary gallery closures can occur during exhibition changeovers. The museum is closed Tuesday and Wednesday and stays open later on Thursday. Wheelchair entry is through the Market Street ramp because the River Walk entrance has stairs. Non-flash personal photography is generally allowed unless a label says otherwise.
